YouTube Video Unavailable: Private, Removed, Deleted or Blocked
YouTube shows nearly the same empty page for situations that have nothing in common. A private video, a deleted one, a channel that no longer exists and a video that simply is not available in your country all look alike. The difference matters, because it decides what you can still find.
Private
The video is still on YouTube, but it is set to private. Nobody can open it without access, and no archive changes that.
What you can still get: whatever was saved while the video was public. Title, description, thumbnail, upload date, often the subtitles. What you cannot get: the video itself.
Unlisted
An unlisted video plays for anyone who has the link. It just does not show up in search or on the channel page.
So if the link was posted somewhere public, a snapshot may exist. If it was only ever passed between a few people, there is nothing to find, here or anywhere else.
If a video was never public, no archive holds it, and it will not be here either.
Removed or deleted
The video is gone from YouTube. This is the case archives handle best.
The page was public, so it may have been saved with the title, description, thumbnail and subtitles. Sometimes the video file was saved too, though that is rare. Start with a lookup by link or video id.
The channel is gone
When a channel is terminated or deleted, all of its videos go at once. One dead link usually means hundreds.
Searching video by video is the slow way here. Look up the channel instead and read the whole list at once, deleted videos included. It works with a channel URL, an @handle, a channel id, or an old /user/ link. See searching by channel.
Blocked in your country, or age restricted
Nothing is lost here. The video is online and someone else can watch it right now. An archive will not help, because the page was never removed. The same goes for a video you cannot open because you are not signed in.
How to tell which one it is
YouTube's own message is the first clue. "This video is private" is clear. "Video unavailable" is not: it covers deletions, terminated channels and country blocks alike.
A quick test: if a friend opens the link and you cannot, it is a restriction, not a deletion. If nobody can open it and the channel page is gone too, the whole channel went down.
When we check a video and find it private, the result says "Private" and nothing more. We show the state, not a guess about who did what or why.
What you can get, by state
- Private: the metadata and subtitles saved while it was public. Never the video.
- Unlisted: only if the link was public enough to be saved. Usually nothing.
- Removed or deleted: metadata, thumbnail, subtitles, sometimes the file. The best case.
- Channel gone: the same as removed, but for the whole list at once. Search the channel.
- Country block or age limit: nothing to recover. The video is alive.
If the video is really gone
Three things are worth trying, in this order. Look it up by link or video id and see what the archives kept. Search the channel, because one deletion is rarely alone. If you need the video itself and not the record of it, look for a reupload. For the rare deleted video whose file survived, watching or downloading the archived copy is a separate step.
